There’s a house going up behind where we’re staying. I’ve been watching it for weeks, from bare dirt to where it is now.
No basement. They lay a perimeter of concrete block and grout right on the ground, then fill the inside with sand and dirt until it’s level with the top of that wall. Everything after that gets built up from there with concrete block. No studs. No wood frame at all. I’m in hurricane territory now, so it makes sense once you think about it, but I didn’t realize the fill-it-in part came before the building-up part. I just assumed a house went up. I didn’t expect the ground it stands on to get built first.
I’ve never seen a house start this way. Cement and sand instead of wood and drywall.
I’ve been out in the lanai most mornings with a protein smoothie, tracking the progress like it’s my job. Which is how I noticed something.
